This delicious watermelonade recipe includes hints of honey and lime juice for the most refreshing summer drink.

watermelonade

I have a difficult time making recipes like this watermelon lemonade with a watermelon because I feel like watermelon, in and of itself, is about as perfect as it can get. Just hand me a salt shaker and a knife and get out of my way!

But today’s watermelonade recipe is a special exception. Why? Because it is basically watermelon that you can drink. No knife, no stickiness, sit back with a straw, and drink the whole melon if the mood hits ya. I add just enough “extra” stuff to enhance the flavor, being careful not to detract from it.

These extra ingredients include lime juice to put the “lemonade” in watermelonade. Then I also add honey for sweetness and a touch of salt, which is totally optional. The instructions are as easy as they come. Just pop all the ingredients in a blender and blend it up until it’s liquefied. Then pour it into a cup filled with crushed ice and you have watermelon lemonade. This is the perfect refreshing drink to enjoy during summer.

So next time you go to buy (or pick) a watermelon, buy (or pick) two instead. Eat one, drink the other. You can’t go wrong! If you wanna see how I do it, skip right on down to the first picture.

And now for the watermelonade.

Storage

This is best served immediately. But just adjust the ingredients depending on how many servings you’re after.

Recipe Notes

  • Feel free to substitute the lime juice for bottled or fresh lemon juice.
  • Another popular substitution is using granulated sugar instead of honey for that added sweetness.
  • Garnish with a lime slice (or lemon slice) and a fresh mint sprig.
  • You can pour the watermelonade straight into a glass with ice. However, you may also like to strain it first for a smoother finish.
  • If you seek an alcoholic watermelonade, add an ounce of vodka or tequila to your glass and give it a good stir before enjoying it. The perfect summer cocktail!

  1. Hi Christy – I am just a few years behind ya, with my oldest being 14, but I know these next 2 years are gonna fly, and before I know it, one right after the other, I’ll be watching my babies getting in the driver’s seat – (Be thankful you live in Alabama and they live in New Jersey, hee-hee!). Your words and those of your readers speak to my “Mama’s-heart” and I can feel the bittersweet sting of what’s to come already. Just a few weeks ago, my precious older daughter, Erin, “graduated” from 8th grade. Her middle school had a ceremony, a “Promotion Promenade”, and it was held on the football field, situated between the middle school and the highschool. I thought I was doing pretty good holding it in when her 8th grade class (506 strong!), made their way onto the football field from the middle school entrance of the field. I even patted myself on the back that I kept my composure during the playing of Pomp and Circumstance, ( I think that was more because I felt it was slightly ridiculous to play such a significant song for an 8th grade graduation, but I digress…). What got me though, was that after the middle school principal gave her ‘farewell address’ to the departing 8th graders, their new highschool principal gave them a welcoming address, and then led them off the football field, via the exit that leads to the highschool. So symbolic, so poignant and SO bittersweet! And before I know it, I will be sitting in those bleachers again looking on at her highschool graduation, and wondering where the last 4 years have gone. This was the infant my husband and I walked the floors with until 3AM, trying desperately to soothe her colic – wasn’t it just yesterday?! I vividly remember Erin on one of my husband’s shoulders screaming, and me on his other shoulder crying at the same time, wondering when it was gonna get better. I guess the saying is true that you’d better watch what you wish for. I’d give anything for just one of those colic-filled nights again. All I can say, is that I admire you, Christy, and all of your readers who have given everything of themselves to love, teach and mold their children and then give them their wings. I hope I can somehow summon up the grace I will need, to do the same for my girls in just a few short years. I wish Brady all the best of luck, and God’s protective hedge around him in his new adventures on the road, and I will pray for peace and comfort for you, along with a never ending stash of hairspray and lip-liner, lol! And me? I’m gonna get out my ‘Mom pom-poms’ and cheer on my freshman! Go Erin and Williamstown Highschool’s Class of 2019!
