Thanks to my husband for recording the Southern Plate Tailgating Cooking Show this past week at UNA. We divided it up into segments lasting a few minutes long each so you can start and stop as you have time. I cannot tell you how much fun I had! This was the first time I’ve ever done anything like that. I’d never been on a stage with a mic and I was worried I might get nervous but let me tell you, I walked out onto that stage with my Southern Plate family in the audience and I was instantly at home. I could do that every night and be happy!

Hope you enjoy it. I would love to hear back from you in the comments section!

Gratefully,

Christy

Introduction (Boy did they make me sound good!), Welcome, and Texas Caviar

With a few stories hither and yon, of course.

Potato Salad, Random stories, the pot I’m coveting but could never bring myself to buy…etc

If only family reunions gave door prizes..

Jordan Rolls, story about Southerners and hospitality from Papa Reed’s perspective 🙂

Southern Style Pulled Pork BBQ, My husband’s way of securing the slow cooker to prevent takeoff ~winks,

working out your aggressions through cooking, etc.

What I do with all this food I cook, Magic of camera angles, vinegar slaw. how you can get away with being lazy by calling it “rustic”,

my public service for gardeners, showing off with apple butter, etc.

History of SouthernPlate.com (how I ended up here), The tale of Grandmama and the lemon bars,

Reading a special passage from the book

Nestle Toll House Cookie Bars, Story of Margarine versus butter, Family Adventure Days, Why I like to cook at ten or eleven at night, Having fun with a member of the Southern Plate Family (who loves his wife!),

Talking about the Southern Living Article, Thrilling kids with popcorn,The Alphabet story, Family as the ultimate backup plan.

My fancy dishpan, Mary Poppins’ visit to my house, making caramel corn, wrapping up the show.

I had such a wonderful time doing this show, I hope you enjoy it. We had a break in between each segment where my dad and Brady went to the mic and gave away door prizes. Bradybug LOVED the microphone and took the opportunity to tell a few jokes and interact with the audience, that is why we’re all laughing a bit as we go back to the cooking each time.

Special thanks again to the HES students at UNA for all of their hard work. I’ve been asked a lot whether or not I will do more cooking shows like this and there is no way I could have pulled it off without the culinary students so y’all would have to get me a big old tour bus to take them all on the road!

  1. Loved the story about your grandmama and the lemon bars. She would fit right in with our crazy bunch. So would you. I still say we’re long lost twin sisters separated by a couple of years and a couple thousand miles.

  2. Christy, I hope no one from my work is reading this . . . . I watched your entire show at work today! I couldn’t stop watching. You are fascinating. I enjoy cooking SO much! I love to cook, I love to watch cooking, I love to eat cooking! I watch that cooking channel non-stop and have been to a couple of pretty impressive names’ cooking shows who have been on tour here. And I can honestly say – Kudos to you Christy for really cooking AND entertaining! I was so impressed. Makes me want to spend the day in the kitchen with you! I know we’d have such a good time cooking lots of good food, but more than that – laughing!

I can hardly wait to meet you in Jackson, MS!

PS…I am a southern California native and my hubby is a TN native. He is in the military. He brought me all the way across the country to Alabama for the first 6 years of our marriage. I grew to love the south. the food, the people, the countryside. Just everything. I have loved your website so much (and so have my friends who I cook for using your recipes.) We are back in San Diego now but I have taken all that I loved about the south and tried to bring it here, in my home. And thanks to you and your website, I have easily been able to do that. Thanks, Christy!!
