I strongly recommend serving your sausage and beef stew with some crusty bread, of course. How else are you going to soak up all the juicy leftovers at the bottom of your bowl?
Recipe Notes
- For a faster cooking time, coat the beef in the flour mixture and then brown it in a skillet over medium heat with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Drain the mixture prior to transferring to the crockpot. Cook on high for 3 to 5 hours.
- Any cut of beef works for this stew recipe. I used the pre-cut stew beef you can find at your local grocery store.
- You can also substitute the smoked sausage in this recipe for your favorite sausage. Try spicy Italian sausage if you want your stew to have a bit of a kick.
- Speaking of spice, you could also add a teaspoon of chili powder or two teaspoons of Cajun spice for more heat.
- If you prefer your stew a little thicker, you can combine 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour with 3 tablespoons of water and stir the mixture into the crockpot 1 hour before the stew is finished cooking. This will create a thicker “gravy” for the stew.
- Instead of crusty bread, serve your sausage and beef stew with your favorite pasta, egg noodles, cornbread, or homemade mashed potatoes.
- For more flavor, add 2 sprigs of chopped fresh rosemary to the crockpot and a sprinkle of .

Do you brown the meat prior to adding it to the slow cooker? This stew sounds delicious! I will definitely add it to my recipes during this cold weather!
Hi Linda I coat the sausage in the flour and brown them just a tad to improve the flavor but you don’t have to. I have also just thrown it in the crock pot when I didn’t have time to mess with it. Also do this with ground beef too. Just always make sure any meat is cooked enough through to 160-165 degrees F.
Perfect for this cold rainy weather and I have everything on hand to make it. Never thought to use sausage and corn with beef stew but am putting it on the menu for the weekend.
This certainly sounds like a great sounding recipe. I don’t usually use a slow cooker, but I’m sure it would be good just to simmer on the top of the stove too.
Always looking for a new stew recipe . This looks delicious ! Can’t wait to try it ..
Love slow cooker meals… love beef stew… love smoked sausage….it’s a triple win
I’m not a fan of any kind of sausage, so my husband made this tonight using stew beef only. He also hates a slow cooker, and used the crockpot setting on the Instapot. Delicious with some home made bread
I never thought of combining stew beef and sausage! Sounds good. I don’t normally buy golden potatoes though. I have a 10 pound bag of russet potatoes on hand. Can I use those?
