Tips for Making Slow Cooker Chicken and Wild Rice
- If you don’t have skinless boneless chicken breasts, you can use bone-in chicken and it will be delicious. You could also use chicken tenders or boneless skinless chicken thighs! You can use fresh or frozen chicken as well. They both work perfectly!
- Uncle Ben’s long grain and wild rice is really the best for this recipe. Stick with the name brand on this one because. The seasoning packet is part of what makes this dish so delicious!
- For different flavors or tastes, use any condensed cream of [whatever] soup!
- If you pre-made the rice and stored in the fridge, let it warm up in the slow cooker for about ten minutes before serving or gently microwave before adding to the slow cooker.
- While this is a great main dish as is, serve with your favorite vegetable side dish or salad, like zucchini and squash, summer corn salad, tomatoes and okra, or fresh green beans.
- If you’d like to make this a one-dish wonder, stir your favorite vegetables into the crock pot in the last hour of cooking. A few options are: chopped mushrooms, diced zucchini, sliced carrots, or frozen peas.

Hey Christy, did u send this recipe out to your subscribers? Cause I didn’t get it in an e-mail, and I looked through my trash and still didn’t see it, thinking maybe I had deleted it! I was looking on here for something else and came across it. Sure does look good! I’m gonna send it to my Mama. She’s all about crock-pot recipes!
I make something similar–the rice, cooked chicken, a white sauce, onions, and water chestnuts, all mixed up in a casserole and baked. I can even “hide” spinach in there, nad it all gets eaten. It’s a long time family favorite–I remember my mom making it in the early 80s. Good stuff, that rice!
Betsy — We make something very similar here except it also has pimentos and french cut green beans. Made it this past weekend! Sooo good! I have had the recipe forever.. my mom made it when I was a wee one and that was eons ago!
OH, PLEASE TELL ME YOUR RECIPE. I KNOW WHAT YOU R TALKING ABOUT. A LOCAL EATERY MAKES IT, BUT I CANT REMEMBER WHAT SHE CALLS IT. I HAD IT ONE DAY AND LOOKED ALL OVER FOR THE RECIPE, I EVEN EMAILED ASKING CHRISTY IF SHE HAD IT.
Bless you and your family Christy!
I really do feel as though I’m part of the “family”, and your stories always ring a bell with me, and I can remember similar things from my childhood.
Christy-
Do you have any idea how this (or other rice dishes) will freeze? I have a food saver and it is good for freezing most things but I’m not sure about rice. I want to make it this weekend and here lately, I’ve been doubling all recipes and freezing half (since I’m already getting my pots and pans dirty) because I’ll have a new baby in about 2 weeks and don’t plan on cooking much after he gets here!
Thanks Christy. I have been using my slow cooker alot this summer. We love chicken in any form and this sounds yummy and very easy. How wonderful to walk into the house after a busy day and get greeted by an aroma that this is sure to produce. Open up a bagged salad, slice some crusty bread and you are on the way “hawg heaven” And with slow cooker liners, clean up will be a breeze.I for one, would love to see more slow cooker recipes.
I sure do appreciate all the time and energy you put into “SouthernPlate” and I LOVE Mama Janices’s input. You both would fit into my family just fine.!!!
This sounds sooo yummy! It is really similar to something I already make. The only difference is that I add a block of cream cheese and instead of using the rice seasoning packet, I use a packet of dry Italian salad dressing mix. My family loves the way I make it but I’m gonna’ try it your way this weekend – I’m sure it’ll be a big hit. Whenever I make something really good, my hubby always asks if it came from your website!
This is very similar to a recipe that was in Southern Living almost 2 years ago. It calls for cream cheese and a packet of Italian dressing mix along with the cream of mushroom soup. It is DELICIOUS! BTW, I have that same crock pot and I love it!
