Tips for Making Slow Cooker Chicken and Wild Rice
- If you don’t have skinless boneless chicken breasts, you can use bone-in chicken and it will be delicious. You could also use chicken tenders or boneless skinless chicken thighs! You can use fresh or frozen chicken as well. They both work perfectly!
- Uncle Ben’s long grain and wild rice is really the best for this recipe. Stick with the name brand on this one because. The seasoning packet is part of what makes this dish so delicious!
- For different flavors or tastes, use any condensed cream of [whatever] soup!
- If you pre-made the rice and stored in the fridge, let it warm up in the slow cooker for about ten minutes before serving or gently microwave before adding to the slow cooker.
- While this is a great main dish as is, serve with your favorite vegetable side dish or salad, like zucchini and squash, summer corn salad, tomatoes and okra, or fresh green beans.
- If you’d like to make this a one-dish wonder, stir your favorite vegetables into the crock pot in the last hour of cooking. A few options are: chopped mushrooms, diced zucchini, sliced carrots, or frozen peas.

This was delicious. Made exactly like the recipe states, but our family likes mushrooms
so I added a small can of sliced mushrooms. Also, next time I will use a smaller onion.
I think for a change it might be good to leave the mushrooms out and put in a can
of chopped water chestnuts for a little crunch.
The original recipe without added mushrooms is delicious. It is easy and has a wonderful flavor.

Thank you so much Judy! I am so glad you are enjoying the recipes and appreciate you sharing!!!
Can you make this with parboiled long grain rice? My family likes that better. Ps I make your Slow Cooker Cheesy Chicken And Rice every Fall and Winter (without onion) and it’s my son’s favorite!
You can certainly try it. I have never made it using that but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work.
Can i also throw some celery in there? I know chicken and celery go good together
You sure can if you want to.
Hey there! Thanks for sharing this recipe. I’m in a hurry, if I cook this on high, how long should I cook it? Thanks!
Everybody, what did you fix to go with this recipe? Salad, other vegetable, fruit? I need some inspiration!
I’d like to make this when my daughter’s family comes to visit next week, but I’d need to fix it in the oven since my crockpot isn’t large enough to fix what we’d need. Can I do something similar on 200° or so in the oven without the chicken drying out? I enjoy your newsletters, your cookbooks, and your down-to-earth practicality. My hubby even uses your recipes when it’s his turn to cook for poker night! Now that’s HIGH praise!!
Yes! You can typically cook any slow cooker recipe in the oven and vice versa. I don’t know time/temp conversions but you could probably search on the web and find that.
Ok, so I seem to have all of these ingredients…and a slow cooker (a really cool one I won somewhere! 🙂 ) Have drooled over this recipe before didn’t get around to trying it, but this is going in the slow cooker in a few minutes!
Thanks revisiting it Christy!
