Orange Juice Special

My family loves smoothies. Our reigning favorite is still the Bananarita Breakfast Smoothie, but this one holds a close second. The hubster says it tastes like one of the old Orange Julius but  I think it tastes more like a Dreamsicle to me. Concentrated orange juice is the secret to that burst of flavor while the milk and vanilla make it nice and creamy. Although Ricky and I disagreed on what it tastes like most, we both agree that it is worth repeating whenever we get a chance!

I’m working on getting my tour dates ready to announce as well as several other big announcements. Since we’re in the home stretch leading up to the book release, I’ll be doing an update post about once a week to let you know something new and exciting that is going on for the Southern Plate Family. You’ll need: Frozen orange juice concentrate (still frozen), milk, vanilla, and sugar. I am using Ideal Sweetener* in place of the sugar. You can use real sugar or your favorite substitute.

*Ideal is a natural sugar substitute that can be baked with just like sugar. I’ve fallen in love. Lots of local grocery stores carry it but none of the ones near me. You can order it off of Amazon.com though. I dearly dearly love it in my iced tea.

Place your frozen orange juice concentrate in a blender.

Pour in your milk.

Add your vanilla

And your sugar or sugar substitute.

Note: there is still a lot of natural sugar in that orange juice but this does cut matters somewhat.

BLEND!

(I just felt like yelling that)

Serve in a glass over ice if you like. This makes about four.

  1. MY kids used to love a version of this when they were growing up and I often threw in an egg for protein – cuz we raised chickens and sold eggs so we always had a good supply. It is sooooo good!! Especially on Sunday mornings when we were trying to get ready for Sunday School in a hurry – it was kind of like a bribe…………

    On another subject – is anyone having trouble finding canned pumpkin? I tried at a local grocery chain the other day and was told they haven’t been able to get it in over a year!! I did find some in Rochester, MN at HyVee over the weekend. I needed some for pic at our Drive Inn restaurant. Surprised me!!

  3. My parents used to make something like this when I was growing up. We always just called it orange julius. I loved it! I’ll have to get some OJ concentrate and whip some up.

    I actually have a kinda funny story about this drink. Way back when my parents were first married, and had to be extreme tightwads, they were making orange julius. They were using a wooden spoon to scrape down the sides, and ended up accidentally catching the spoon in the blender blade, spreading slivers of wooden spoon all over in the drink. Not wanting to waste food, they valiantly tried to fish out as many slivers as they could and drink what was left. After trying to enjoy the extra-fiber version of orange julius, they realized it was a lost cause and had to throw it out. Moral of the story, don’t use a wooden spoon to scrape the sides of a blender, especially while the blender is running!

  5. My mother used to make a similar breakfast drink for us in the blender when we were growing up. She always called it “Orange Whip”. It had the same ingredients with the addition of ice to make it very cold and frosty. Yum! If I wasn’t on a low-carb diet then I would go “Whip” me up one right now! Oh wait, I think I can tweak this recipe to fit into my diet. (Splenda, heavy whipping cream, Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange Drink Mix, vanilla, and ice.) I’m also planning on altering the Bananarita Smoothie. I used Splenda when I tried it the first time and LOVED it, but the banana is still a no-no because it’s very high in carbs. I’m thinking I might replace it with banana flavoring instead. It may not taste near as good or have the same consistency as the original, but it’s at least worth a try. Thanks for taking me back to one of my childhood favorites.
