North Alabama-Style Pulled Chicken BBQ
This is a chicken version of the popular pulled pork BBQ that can be found at just about any BBQ joint in North Alabama. Many folks forego the sauce entirely because it is already juicy and flavorful and nothing else is even needed!

What’s even better is that my version tastes just like the restaurant’s, but instead of a smokehouse, we use a slow cooker and boneless, skinless chicken breasts! Another huge benefit of this for me is that I can make 5 pounds of pulled chicken BBQ for what I would purchase 1 pound of BBQ for.
If you are looking for some sauce to add, check out the White BBQ Sauce Alabama that Southern Plate is famous for, click here.
Ingredients
- 5 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1.5 cups apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes does not make it spicy
Instructions
- Place chicken in slow cooker. Pour cider vinegar over and add salt and pepper.
- Cook on high, 4-5 hours or low, 8-9 hours. Use tongs to remove chicken from slow cooker - note that chicken will fall apart as you do this.
- Take out 2 cups of liquid from the slow cooker and discard rest. To that two cups, add brown sugar, hot sauce, and pepper flakes. Stir. Put chicken back in slow cooker, pour sauce over, stir, and enjoy!

You had me at chicken! I can eat chicken every day. To me, it’s one of the most versatile foods you can make. You can fry, bake, grill, broil, grill, barbecue, etc. I have never had North Alabama Style Pulled Chicken. I’ve never used vinegar in my chicken recipes, so I am looking forward to trying this.I am going to make it soon. I always have chicken in my freezer. I also love that this uses a slow cooker. I do not turn on my oven during the summer. Another bonus is that I have all the ingredients on hand.

Did you use fresh or frozen chicken breast?
I typically let mine thaw.
I am reading this post in September 2020 during the pandemic. I was trying to find a different pulled chicken recipe that didn’t call for just a bottle of sweet baby ray’s lol. I wanted something more regional and homemade. I just wanted to say I am so happy to find a recipe site run by a Christian! I am now subscribed to your emails and am looking forward to more words of wisdom and encouragement, as well as delicious recipe ideas. It’s especially pertinent now, with the riots and pandemic, and election, and the world just seems (IS) upside down, to show grace. Thanks for the reminder, and thanks for my dinner recipe for tomorrow night! God bless you and keep you!
Welcome! There is always room at our table for one more. Blessings to you and your family.
Question…. could I get away with using this for chicken tacos? Or is it too barbecue -y?
Love your recipes! Made your bar sugar cookies over the winter… DELISH!
Hey! You could mix it with some taco seasoning and that would help mask the bbq flavor. It would still be distinct but personally I think in a good way. It all depends on how much you love this chicken 🙂
Thanks, I have tried this and like it.
I am so glad to hear you liked it Mary, thank you so much for giving it a try!!
