Helpful Kitchen Tips

How to Make Maple-Glazed Pork Chops:

stir salt and pepper in a bowl

Stir your salt and pepper together.

sprinkle each side of the pork chop in salt/pepper mixture

Sprinkle each side of the pork chops with salt and pepper

brown pork chops in oil

Place one to two tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

I love making these pork chops in my favorite Caraway pans!

Add pork chops and cook until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.

drippings from pork chops

See all this yummy stuff on the bottom of the pan? We’re about to work that up into our sauce.

pour balsamic vinegar into pan

Reduce the heat to medium and pour your balsamic vinegar into the pan.

It is going to bubble and steam a lot when you add it.

use wooden spoon to scrape bottom of pan

Just pour it in and use a wooden spoon to stir around and gently scrape the bottom of the skillet.

pour in syrup and stir well

Pour in your syrup and stir well.

add pork chops to pan

Add in pork chops and continue cooking, stirring frequently, over medium heat until sauce is thickened and pork chops are no longer pink in the center, 7-10 minutes.

thickening sauce

**Important note about sauce: It’s still going to be bubbly but will look kind of like this. Pancake syrup probably won’t be as dark but color is not what we’re looking for here, it’s thickness.

cook until sauce is thickened

Now this will most likely take the full ten minutes and maybe even a few more if you are using pancake syrup, but I find that maple thickens up a little bit faster so it will be more like seven.

It is hard to tell when the sauce is thickened because it will still be very fluid while it’s hot. When I think we’re there I spoon a little sauce over my pork chop to see if it is thick. Once it is, remove your pan from the heat and allow it to sit for about five minutes. Then, rub each pork chop in the glaze on both sides before removing to serving plates.

  1. Oh! Christy
You have made my day .
I laughed so hard at your story I had to make a trip to the( other room).
You tell a story that is so believable( As I am sure it was) that I lived every minute of it . I even found myself hunching my shoulder in the layaway room at Wallmart and whiping your daughters tears as you did .I love your stories Christy. Now its time to get out those chops from the freezer for dinner tonight .
    they look so yummy .

  2. I absolutely loved this post. Altho both our sons are now in college, I can completely relate to this. (My husband’s an engineer too.) Sometimes the obvious just seems lost on husbands or maybe it’s just moms are more in tune w/ our children. I can’t tell you the number of times scenarios like this were played out in our family. Just last weekend, i was standing behind my kids’ backs doing the slice across the neck sign at my husband to stop him from saying anything further. They don’t take subtle cues – it has to be a rolling pin moment if you know what i mean!

  3. The same thing happen to me several years ago. We went and saw the movie Twister and on our way home the tornado sirens went off. By the time we got to our house there was debrie flying through the air and the tornado touched down a mile from us. Very scary moment and way too close. Now when we have tornado sirens going off I dive for the basement and my husband goes outside trying to see it. I think it is a man thing?

  4. Great story Christy- I totally understand your aggravation with the weather service. We live a bit north of you in Ethridge TN.
We had tornado watches/warnings on March 2 of this year. Nothing happened during the watches and warnings.. Next time the weather radio went off, it was severe thunderstorms, Those severe thunder storms resulted in golf ball size hail, wild winds and 95% of the folks on our road- a 5 mile stretch getting a whole new roof! Some brave or crazy souls said they saw a tornado, I wouldn’t know because I was hunkered down in the corner of the basement with my flashlight, weather radio, cell phone and my motorcycle helment on! I’m with you and Katy Rose- we get enough excitement in this neck of the woods we definately don’t need to see it for fun!

  5. Yes, yes, yes! Every Christmas we drive from Chicago to Massachusetts. People are amazed that I prefer to drive myself with the two kids, allowing my husband to fly. But after one particularly BAD snow storm in Ohio (he drove literally 5ft from the rear bumper of a semi) where we exited following said truck and ended up in the drivers driveway all because my hubby refused to pull over. I like having total control over the steering wheel. How is it that men don’t get those subtle verbal cues we send to them? My hubby would have (and does) turned off the radio too. For smart guys they can be pretty clueless.

  6. Husbands – gotta love ’em or we’d kill ’em! I spent part of my growing up in Kansas – so when that siren goes off, I head for safety. My other half heads outside to look at the clouds – generally followed by whatever children happen to be home visiting. Not many tornadoes up here in Rhode Island, but next time I hear that beep beep beep and head for the basement, I think I’ll grab my own version of the unicorn and think of Katy Rose as I while away the time straightening up the big freezer (and checking for some nice thick chops for this recipe).
