I get lots of requests for my home made tomato salsa. I started with a recipe printed in Southern Living in the 80’s.
My boys love Shepherds Pie. They could eat it once a week! (If I’d let them!)
I always have Chinese Cookies. They are crisp, sweet…delicious. (Oatmeal, coconut, nuts….and the usual ingredients in cookies) I got the recipe from a friend 40 yrs ago….no I am not old…just started young!!!!! Love this time of year and the bar is filled with goodies from Dec 1 -New Years Day!!!
my favorite recipe to make at Christmas is my husband’s great grandmother’s famous pecan pie.
I love Southernplate.com and have used many yummy recipes from this site! I am also enjoying my Southern Plate Cookbook and have purchased a few for Christmas gifts this year. My favorite holiday recipe (if I had to choose just one) is peanut butter fudge. A very simple recipe of sugar, butter, vanilla, and peanut butter, it is super easy and very yummy! We have to make several batches to make it through the holiday season. Happy Holidays Southernplate readers!
My favorite family recipe to make is my Mother’s Chicken Surprise! What is Chicken Surprise you ask? Well, that’s the beauty of the dish… it changes every time. In short it is basically a casserole whose main ingredient is – you guessed it – chicken! It started with mashed potatoes on the bottom (yum!) with a chicken, broccoli, soup, sour cream middle and crispy bread crumb and butter topping. Every time my Mom made it however, she changed it up. Sometimes there would be rice, sometimes corn, sometimes cheese, sometimes stuffing etc. hence the “Surprise”! The chicken part, however, always stayed the same. Now that I am pregnant with my Husband & I’s first baby, I can’t wait to make Chicken Surprise with and for him or her. It is a tradition I will definitely pass down. 🙂
Merry Christmas Christy,
My family, as many familys are, is living in the fast lane. But there is always those special times when our family can come together for a down home family dinner.
One meal is our Thanksgiving Turkey. This recipe actually comes from Emerils recipes collection. I started cooking my turkey this way about 7 years ago and it is absolutely the best turkey ever, It is so moist and tender. The first time I cooked a turkey this way I was not sure if it would taste the way my family would expect a Thanksgiving turkey should taste like.
The recipe calls for;
10 to 12lb Turkey
5 sprigs fresh Thyme
1 med Carrot – chopped coursely
1 med Celery Rib – chopped coursely
1 med Onion – chopped coursely
1 Orange cut in half
1 Bay Leaves
Salt
Pepper
Butter
Stuff the cavity of the Thurkey with all ingredience and cook.
You also baste the outside of the Turkey with a cup of Apple Cider and a cup on chicken brothe.
This is such a great recipe and everyone who has come to my house for Thanksgiving or Christmas gets this Turkey and they all “love” it.
