  1. My favorite thing to make is okra casserole, my mama loves it, so when I get the chance I make that for her. My husband loves skillet cornbread. Between those two dishes I add a meat and I have meal! 🙂 Your recipes are the best though, being from the south it is like opening the family cookbook. Thanks! Love you! 🙂

  2. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg’s Battle Creek Sanitarium Famous Golden Salad.

My 93 year old mother-in-law, hired in the late 1930’s, by Dr. Kellogg upon her graduation as a Registered Dietician, has made this Golden Salad every Thanksgiving and Christmas for the last 65 years.

Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, along with his brother W.K. Kellogg, started the Kellogg Company. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg began pursuing and promoting good health at the then famous Battle Creek Sanitarium (founded 1866). Dr. Kellogg, a proponent of vegetarianism as the key ingredient to good health had the Golden Salad, prepared by my mother-in-law, presented as a regular offering in the sanitarium’s dining room. The Battle Creek Sanitarium soon became the “in-place” for the rich and famous of the world who traveled there to seek and practice a healthy lifestyle.

The salad has never missed a Thanksgiving or Christmas in our family and the tradition continues as it has become a favorite with our two grandchildren.

We oft times think it could be a desert as it is so delicious but my mother-in-law’s rule regarding salad presentation is “if it’s on a bed of lettuce … it’s a salad”. “if you don’t see lettuce … it’s a desert”.

  3. We love to make Christmas Wreaths. These are made with corn flakes, held together by melted marshmallows and butter with green food coloring. While the mixture is still warm, shaped into wreaths, decorated with red hots. Kids and adults love them!!!!

  4. We love to make party mix in the oven. My 8 year old son loves to pour the ingredients in and getting to take it out of the oven every 15 minutes to stir it! And of course we love to eat it!
