  1. Every holiday, event or special dinner my family requests my macaroni and cheese. It’s a very simple recipe, but they seem to love it.

  2. My oldest daughter graduates from college this coming May. She has lived in an apartment there since her sophomore year and despite access to countless recipes on-line and a few cookbooks she has already collected, my daughter has called countless times (on her way to the grocery store) to ask me how to make our family favorites.

For a Christmas gift, I have pulled together the recipes of her family favorites as well as the trademark recipes of relatives, neighbors and friends who have touched her life. Most are simple with few ingredients; but they are the go-to recipes she won’t have to second guess.

I’ve included “Care Package Cookies,” the ones her grandmother first sent to her at camp then college; “Ham and Chive Biscuits,” another grandmother specialty my daughter has already been making for SEC tailgates; a potato casserole known around here as “Funeral Potatoes” because a family friend always makes them to feed grieving families; my version of “Chicken and Dumplings” which are semi-homemade and easy thanks to grocery store rotesserie chicken, broth and frozen dumplings . . . the list goes on and on.

At the back of this book, in addition to tips and short cuts offered up by the recipe contributors, I’ve included pages for her to add the recipes she will bring to the table. And last but not least, I included a list of websites she should check out as she embarks on her own culinary journey. Needless to say, I http://www.southernplate.com is on that list!

  3. My little granddaughter is so little that she just loves to make chicken noodle soup (from a can) with me. She adds the water and stirs and stirs. Of course, she has to put her apron on first.
