Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?
When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…
And put a bowl in front of her.
Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…
And add a pat of butter.
And a sprinkling of sugar.
And give it a good stir.
And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.
Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.
It sure was good.
My Dad and I would always have desert on rice nights with rice, sugar, cinnamon, raisins and milk. I always thought it was a special treat and it was but little did I know, that was how Mom and Dad stretched the budget at meals for us growing kids.
Still makes me smile and I make it today for my grandkids sometimes.
Yep had rice and sugar as a little girl…sometimes I still make it just for myself for supper since my husband only eats salt and pepper on his…does not know what his is missing!
Have a great weekend,
My dad still does this…if there is rice for supper he will always end his meal by eating rice with butter and sugar for dessert.
Yes, indeed. Great for dessert made just like this or with a wee bit of milk.
We love Rice as a snack; put brown sugar , rasins and cold milk yummie!
Yummy is right!!
I ate this as a little girl and I still do lol. It is so simple and good. My husband thinks I am strange though lol.
Not only does this bring back sweet memories of eating such rice when I was a little girl .., but my Grandmother used the SAME dishes. Every time I see that
pattern it makes me think of eating in her kitchen! So thanks for the memory… And if you ever want to kick it up a notch try adding raisins.
I can’t believe. Just the other day I was thinking of my very special aunt and these exact dishes that she had. Such sweet memories. . .
Our favorite way to use leftover rice was to scramble it with a few eggs and some butter for “eggs and rice”! So yummy!
