Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?

When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…

And put a bowl in front of her.

Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…

And add a pat of butter.

And a sprinkling of sugar.

And give it a good stir.

And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.

Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.

It sure was good.

Did you eat this when you were little?

Was there some other comfort food that you remember along these lines? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

  1. Our Indian (Oriental) family ate rice frequently with curries and so forth. My father wouldn’t touch rice with milk and sugar, but my mother gave it to us children. Even now it goes down a fair treat when I’m unwell and nothing else sounds edible. Indian groceries sell flaked rice which is reconstituted and warmed; that makes a good version of this, too.

    1. My Granny used to make it without the butter, but with the sugar, plus evaporated milk–I still make it sometimes and I still love it!

  2. I do the same thing, but with rice, butter and Brown sugar – (or light maple syrup)! It’s really good..

  3. My brother and I ate so much rice while we were growing up that I thought we were going to turn into rice but it was so-ooo good. I still love it and so does my brother.

  4. I still have this, but we call it rice, sugar, cinnamon and milk…we use milk like it was a bowl of cereal. I don’t let my hubby make the rice cause he will melt butter in the pan of water before putting in rice. But my comfort food right now is any pan gravy on pancakes. As a teenager I would eat this with my grandpa when I delivered newspapers. It gives me good memories!!

  5. I am so glad I stumbled upon this. I was thinking the other day about “sweet rice” my Mother used to serve me for breakfast. I’ve asked so many people if they know how to cook sweet rice — everyone thought I was nuts. I think this plus some milk would be exactly what my Mother used to fix for me. Love your recipes!!
