Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?
When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…
And put a bowl in front of her.
Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…
And add a pat of butter.
And a sprinkling of sugar.
And give it a good stir.
And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.
Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.
It sure was good.
Not only did we have hot buttered rice as a treat, my mom did a lot of canning and another treat for us was when she opened a can of tomatoes and heated them poured over broken bread slices and we put sugar on top and had a feast.
M. Carol, my mother used to make canned tomatoes heated and mixed with torn bread, too. She called it one of her Depression (-era) dishes. We didn’t have sugar on ours, though.
My mama used to make this for breakfast as well. I remember making it at lunch when I was in college. I got my Japanese friend to try it and she gagged. 🙂 Another food that makes me think of my mama is biscuit pudding. She used to make that wtih left over biscuits. So good…. I wish I had the recipe.
I remember my momma making this for us as a dessert when we were little. We added milk too.
Both of my parents were born and raised in Alabama. The only way my momma fixed rice and grits for us when we were little was with butter and sugar. My sister still eats her rice with sugar. When there was left-over rice my mom would make rice pudding with raisins.
I still have this for breakfast quite often.
I am 27 yrs and to this day this is how I eat my rice every time I eat a meal that includes it. My mom raised us on eating it this way and now I have my 3yr old eating it. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!
My mom and I would eat this when I was a kid, but she would have the sugar on it and I would have salt and pepper. Still eat it this way when I just need a little comfort on a fork.
