Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?
When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…
And put a bowl in front of her.
Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…
And add a pat of butter.
And a sprinkling of sugar.
And give it a good stir.
And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.
Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.
It sure was good.
When I was in the foster care system in Michigan, one of the older girls in our house made this for me as well as cheddar pb&J sandwiches when I was feeling down
She sounds like a sweet girl that had good taste-buds!!
Loved it – but have to admit loved it even more with brown rice and a slight dusting of cinnamon…(oh..now you got me thinkin’ ’bout tapioca..my diet thanks you!! (not))
When my Louisiana husband and I got married in 1970! he thought I was so strange: I would eat rice with sugar and milk. Being primarily in the North, I thought that was how it was always eaten!
Now living in Louisiana, I have learned quite the difference in eating rice!! But the sugar/milk rice
is one of those comfort foods for me.
I thought he was the strange one because he would mix jelly and peanut butter for biscuits or toast! He still eats breakfast that same way and to my horror? delight? two of our three adults kids
do the same!
LOL, aren’t food habits the strangest thing? I love it!!
My mother had these dishes. She bought a whole set from the Jewel Tea Man who came around door to door with his wears. I have the salt & pepper shakers to my mother’s set. I am 74 years of age and still can remember all the best things life has brought to me.
Thanks for the recipe and I am going to make it real soon.

Yes! 🙂 My mom would always heat up leftover rice the next morning and add butter, sugar and milk. I love it and sometimes still do this. Thank you for all your recipes as they bring back a lot of my own childhood memories.
I always used milk and sugar but I just tried it yesterday with the butter added in and it is so delicious only one of my kids likes it the other 3 kids thinks I’m crazy but I also love elbow macaroni with butter and ketchup too I prefer that over spaghetti
Great granddaddy introduced this dish to me. I still eat it as a comfort food.
Love the stuff! Only we added just a little bit of milk to it. The best thing was drinking that sweet, buttery milk after I ate all the rice!
We did too Ellen! 🙂
