Hot Buttered Sweet Rice

Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?
When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…
And put a bowl in front of her.
Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…
And add a pat of butter.
And a sprinkling of sugar.
And give it a good stir.
And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.
Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.
It sure was good.
Oh my goodness, I love rice with butter and sugar! My grandmother and my mom used to make this for me all the time. I still love to eat it even though my husband thinks it’s super strange.
I made this a lot in all of the 52 years we’ve been married. I do remember that Jewel Tea bowl. Mom would buy a few pieces every time the Jewel Tea salesman would come by the house.
My sweet mother used to fix rice like this for my brother and me…and to the day we lost her, she fixed her own rice like this. What sweet memories.
Actually we had rice the other morning for breakafst with biscuits nothing like it ..That just how we eat . My 30 yr old Grandsonson ask me if I remembered how to make it as he remember it from summers yrs ago when spening time with us..
Sometimes I will have this for supper if its just me. My mother made this foe us as breakfast on cold winter mornings before we went to school.
My mom just passed away a year ago – 98 yrs. old. She used to make this for me but poured a little cream over it. I now make it for my 4 yr. old twin grandsons esp. when it’s cold and snowy outside. Love it !
we ate the rice with butter, no sugar, but added a little soy sauce. i love eating it to this day!
