Do you love to order fried apples at restaurants? I love them just about any way I can get them (click here for my fried apples recipe) but recently I had this fun idea…
What if you got store bought applesauce and seasoned it to taste like fried apples?
All the flavor of fried apples made entirely out of ingredients you can keep on hand that won’t go bad like fresh apples do, and no peeling, coring, or chopping!
Fried apples are usually served as a side dish but some folks save them to eat last as a dessert. You could also have them for breakfast!
Here is my simple recipe, full of spices and flavorings of fried apples without the fuss or time involved. It’s just a matter of mixing it all together and letting it simmer, so with very little work you can have a deliciously spiced side in no time at all. And nope, it’s not the same thing as apple butter – but if you want my apple butter recipe click here 🙂
What You’ll Need:
Ingredients:
- unsweetened applesauce*
- ginger
- cinnamon
- allspice
- cloves
- butter
- dark brown sugar
*You can use sweetened applesauce if that is what you have, but you’ll need to taste it a few times to get the sweetness right. I’d start by not adding any sugar and then tasting it after cooking a few minutes. I prefer to get unsweetened so I can add that brown sugar flavor to it and sweeten according to my taste.
How to Make Fried Apple Applesauce:
Place everything in a large skillet and put over medium heat, stirring well to combine.
Upgrade your skillet! Check out this AMAZING Caraway Skillet.
Continue stirring as the butter melts and the brown sugar breaks up.
Once the mixture begins to bubble, reduce temperature to low.
At this point, carefully taste and add 1/4 cup more brown sugar, if desired.
Stir occasionally, about ten minutes, or until thickened.
This Fried Apple Applesauce keeps well in the refrigerator and is good hot or cold. It’s an easy win!

To Becca and Sheila, I have an old cookbook called “Heirlooms Fom The Kitchen” by Joan Hutson. The only thing I ever made in it was called, “Cinnamon and Applesauce Salad.” Here it is: Dissolve 2 ounces of red hots (cinnamon candy) in 1 cup of boiling water. Add 1 package of red Jello and dissolve. Add 2 cups of applesauce. Chill and serve. It is really good and SO pretty in a crystal bowl. By the way Christy, this lady lived (don’t know if she still does) in Huntsville and I got her cookbook at the VBCC at one of the craft shows they have there. Had her autograph it for me. Also, eggs fried in that grease is some good eaten! The whole plate looks great!
What time do we eat, Christy?
Christy, do you think this could be canned in pint jars and give as gifts and how long would it last. Love fried apples and will have to try this.
I love fried apples and I love easy even more!!! Thanks Christy 🙂
You’re a girl after my own heart Michelle!!!
This sounds great. Can the brown sugar be substituted for Brown Sugar Splenda?
Absolutely!
Christy, this looks so good and I love fried apples. But I am diabetic
Do you think you could use the brown sugar substitute? I think that is
light brown sugar. What could you do for the dark brown sugar effect?
How long do you think it should cook in crockpot? I love your recipes
so much and the family thinks you are the greatest cook ever. Keep
it up!!!!
It would work just fine! I’d put it in the slow cooker no more than 3-4 hours on low and it will be ready. You could even make it in the microwave, just get it good and hot and be careful about splattering yourself 🙂
you are so sweet, thank you so much!!!!!! I needed that pep talk !
Hey Christy! Would this work in the crockpot? I bet it would smell delicious… and as I’m out of Scentsy and my house is showing tomorrow… this could do double duty I bet! I’m going to have to head out to the store just for some applesauce… or could I just chop up some apples? Oh man, now I have to go experiment! 🙂 Love your site!!!
