How many of you remember crumbling up cornbread into a glass of sweet milk and eating it with a spoon after supper?

This was a special treat we ALWAYS did when spending the night with my grandparents, only they used buttermilk.

If you ever find yourself wondering why folks call whole milk “sweet milk” just pour yourself up a big old glass of buttermilk! After a sip or two of that, it will make perfect sense!

  1. My favorite buttermilk in the Kroger brand, low fat. Soooooooooooo good with cornbread! Or………….. anything else!

    1. Kroger brand is the only kind I buy, until 2days ago, my new magazine had a recipe for buttermilk. In a mason jar ,put 1/2 cup buttermilk, 2 cups whole milk and 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt. Let it sit at room temperature for 24-36 hrs and then put in fridge. It will coat the inside of jar. It’s a good thing

    1. We always had it in glasses too. It was a dish-saving measure around there, I’m sure. In the country, practicality is the norm.

      1. When I was a kid in Kentucky, my grandfather convinced me to pass on Mamaw’s cake and eat his style of dessert. I have been eating buttermilk over cornbread ever since!

  3. I love cornbread and milk. Can’t do buttermilk though! I could actually have a huge glass or two for dinner and be perfectly happy. If the cornbread is still warm from the oven I could eat the whole skillet. I have always added a little bit of salt to the crumbled cornbread before pouring in the milk. Since my mom, grandmother, and grandfather do that too I guess it’s just part of the family tradition. Oh, and my grandfather prefers buttermilk with his.

  4. I just love cornbread and buttermilk! I would rather have that than sweet milk and cornbread. One thing that I don’t care for too much tho, is sugar in my cornbread. Just leave that out. Pinto beans(with the juice) and cornbread and turnip greens and fried potatoes and onions, oh my!! Southern cooking is just the best!!!
