How many of you remember crumbling up cornbread into a glass of sweet milk and eating it with a spoon after supper?
This was a special treat we ALWAYS did when spending the night with my grandparents, only they used buttermilk.
If you ever find yourself wondering why folks call whole milk “sweet milk” just pour yourself up a big old glass of buttermilk! After a sip or two of that, it will make perfect sense!

I was remembering my father and how he loved to have buttermilk with my mother’s cornbread crumbled up in it “after” he finished the white beans and ham dinner mom would make! I googled buttermilk and cornbread and found this site! I really enjoyed reading everyone’s comments and it brought a happy/I miss you dad tear to my eyes. Seeing him enjoy that mixture is something I’ll always remember about my father. We are from southern Indiana and he was raised for part of his life in the country and I’m sure he learned to eat his cornbread this way from his grandparents which whom he lived with. Thanks for this site and all of the wonderful comments. I appreciate all the memories in brought up for me today!
Thank you for visiting with us Craig, we hope you will come around again sometime for another walk down memory lane or just to find something good to cook!!
My grandmother from Louisiana called buttermilk and cornbread couscous. I’ve have come to know couscous as a mideastern grain. Anyone else familiar with this term being used for this southern classic?
3+ day old unsweetened cornbread, crumbled, with buttermilk over, topped with diced yellow onion, salt & pepper. Better for you than eat the box cornflakes & sugar! No time to make cornbread?…try the chili-cheese Fritos. How many folks love “ranch but fear buttermilk?…jus sayin’
I’m ancient and retired now, but I remember emptying the “break room” at work when I opened my lunch…….corn chips and buttermilk.
I, also, grew up eating cornbread and sweetmilk. I don’t call it sweetmilk anymore but I still eat cornbread and milk. In fact, that is what I had for dessert tonight after eating cornbread and white beans with ham and onion for dinner {formerly known as supper} I like your website very much!
Thank you so much Anita, I am so glad you are enjoying the site!!!
I never imagined someone else had crumbled up corn bread with buttermilk. Everytime I had dinner with my gradparents they made me eat it for desert………..I hated it with a passion, today I really enjoy it and it brings back the good times with gramma n grandad
Isn’t it funny how we look at things much differently as we get older. I can remember as a kid thinking my grandparents were crazy because of some things they would eat, turns out that they are now some of my favorites as well! 🙂
Just had a big glass. I use buttermilk. My mother and her family were from Cookeville, TN.
