How many of you remember crumbling up cornbread into a glass of sweet milk and eating it with a spoon after supper?

This was a special treat we ALWAYS did when spending the night with my grandparents, only they used buttermilk.

If you ever find yourself wondering why folks call whole milk “sweet milk” just pour yourself up a big old glass of buttermilk! After a sip or two of that, it will make perfect sense!

  1. LOVE me some milk & cb, whether its sweet or buttermilk! Often on Saturday nights we would have that for supper b/c Mama was already cooking/preparing for Sunday dinner after church. Sometimes in the summer we would mince up a little bit of green onion with the buttermilk. To this day I still love that tart, tangy taste of buttermilk and I even pour a glass to drink along with my snack of Doritos….yummy…. come on & just try it.

  2. My papaw and I would have cornbread and buttermilk for our desert! He had a special glass that had roosters on it that he had his in and I had a Mason jar for mine…thank you for bringing back those wonderful memories. Now I’m missin’ my nanny and papaw somethin’ awful!!!

  3. Oh this makes me think of my Grandmother and my Daddy. They ate cornbread and buttermilk when I was little when we would visit my grandparents in Alabama. One day I ran inside from playing hard outside in the heat and I was thirsty. Daddy handed me a tall glass of what I thought was cold (sweet) milk. Imagine my surprise when I gulped down buttermilk! I guess I’ve held a grudge all these years, because I’ve never tasted buttermilk since then. I cook with it, but I don’t drink it!

  4. Cornbread and a good old glass of American buttermilk. Yummy! Yep, grew up saying sweet milk and buttermilk. Wasn’t as fond of sweet milk and cornbread. Cornbread with butter and honey too.
