Well, today I’ve gathered a collection of those things to me and I’m excited to share them with you. The neat thing is that most of my favorite things are under $20! It was just a year ago when I could not get this child to leave my side. She clung to me for a lifetime of reasons. Bit by bit, she is venturing out on her own, growing autonomous. So when we were in Target and she said “Ma, can I go shop for some groceries for myself?” I beamed with excitement for her. “Of course. I’ll be around the store somewhere when you’re done, just call me or come find me.” That was another big step, not needing to know exactly where I was at any given time. She gave me a hug and jaunted off with a big grin of expectation on her face. Later on, as I shopped, I caught a glimpse of her out of the corner of my eye, in the freezer section, holding a red basket as she leaned up on tip toes to reach a box before turning it over to read the label. She looked so grown up and I, being fully grown into motherhood, snuck a quick picture. Satisfied with the label, she placed it in her basket and turned to scan more items with a serious look of intent.

I ran into her again in the produce section, walking by as she put her phone back into her purse. I intentionally went elsewhere in the store to avoid continually bumping into her.

Minutes later I heard her excited footsteps behind me and when she popped in front she reached down and retrieved a bag of red grapes. “So I did a google search and it turns out these are supposed to be the sweetest ones. Can we get them so we can see if that’s true?” “Absolutely” I responded. “Okay well I’m going to put them in your buggy because they’re kinda heavy but I want to do a little more shopping.” And she was off again.

When we got ready to check out, her basket contained an Annie’s organic frozen dinner she wanted to try, those grapes that her produce aisle research had led her to, and a 95% cacao chocolate bar (because that is the highest percentage she could find in the store).

Her bag was full and so was my heart. To anyone else, this likely seems trivial, but in life steps are taken one at a time and they add up quickly. I am grateful for those times when I recognize the steps for what they are. My little girl is growing up and I’ve got the best seat in the house.
