I have made these beans since the early eighty’s. My kids loved them. I used dry mustard instead of jar mustard and hamburger instead of the weenies. Only because mom doesn’t like weenies.
Just made these again for Canada Day, also made them for Father’s Day last year I followed the recipe exactly and everyone liked them, this year on father’s day, I shorted the sugar and used a tart BBQ sauce instead of ketchup, they were very well liked, for Canada day I skipped the sugar added the BBQ sauce, and on impulse added about half a cup of Crown Royal Whiskey, everyone thought they were the best, and they are atill good cold or warmed up.
YUM! My guys are weird and won’t eat peas or beans…..they say it’s a “texture” thing. But I am southern through and through and just LOVE them. I eat them for lunch (sometimes with your hot water cornbread) when these guys are at work/school. Heaven. OH! Almost forgot to say that I tried this recipe and it was wonderful & will now be on my regular lunch rotation! Thanks, Christie!
I am so glad you liked it Becky!!! I have to eat some of my favorite dishes at lunch when it is just me as well, I completely understand where you are coming from on that one!
Made the beans according to recipe and they turned out great BUT, I am the laziest cook in the world and despise stirring and watching something cook so I made them again but put them in a 9×13 and baked them for about an hour, uncovered, without having to stir or mess with them in any way. They turned out delicious.
Are you sure we aren’t sisters? LOL, I love anything that makes life easier!!
This recipe sounds the same as 3 bean casserole- except in the casserole, we use browned hamburger and cooked cut up bacon in it, rather than hot dogs (weenies). Also just put it in a dutch oven, and put it in the oven to bake for an hour.
Oh Christy, your recipes and stories always provoke the best memories to flood my mind and heart. Thank you!
My mom made this and called it beanie weenie.
I make these all the time now! They’ve are my go-to recipe. Thanks, Christy! I experimented with another bean recipe for a few years that called for bacon and I could never get the bacon right. Now I make these and use good quality smoked sausage instead of the hotdogs. I get compliments every time. So easy too!!
I am so glad they are a hit at your house as well!!
I ate this growing up, and I cook it for my husband all the time. It’s his favorite meal. I peel and cut up potatoes, toss them with melted butter and onions, and bake them in the oven. My husband pours the baked bean casserole over the potatoes, and eats it that way.
Oh my goodness, I bet that is so good!!
