I made these for the 4th, and they were very good! The only thing I did different was I used a can of the Bush’s Sweet Heat Beans instead of the kidney beans, added a small handful of chopped green pepper, and turkey weenies. I baked them at 350 for an hour uncovered. They are our new favorite beans! I’m looking forward to leftovers tomorrow!
I also buy my canned beans, tomatoes, vegetables, etc. at Aldi. I bought the baked beans I used for these beans there. Aldi is also has good prices on baking supplies. Love Aldi!
I am so glad to hear that you liked them Shari!! Aldi just can’t be beat in my book!!!
I made these again for company yesterday & made them without any meat in them. I substituted a can of rinse black beans for the butterbeans as I didn’t have those. I also used a teaspoon of Aizona Dreaming seasoning from Penzey’s in place of salt & pepper. Best baked bean recipe! I like how you can adapt them to the ingredients you have on hand.
I am so glad to hear they were a hit!!
Oh, Christy, you’re so funny!! 🙂 I love your stories. And these beans look delicious! I’m going to have to try them.
🙂
I just got a little giggle about the Serves: 4-6 as a main dish : )
🙂
For vegetarian friends could I do it without the hotdogs?
Absolutely, or use those vegetarian ones, your choice!
Christy, these sound yummy, and just in time for the 4th! Your comment about the mustard made me laugh. We have several kinds of mustard in our kitchen, but most of the time we reach for what we lovingly refer to as the “cheap yellow mustard”. Have a happy holiday!
First off…these are “grandma’s beans”, and we know grandma is always the best!
I’ve Been making these for over 42 years and still love them. I use bacon instead of weenies.
These are great midnight snacks cold on white bread with butter and hot sauce. It’s ok because beans are protein right???
I like the way you think Cheryl!! Protein indeed!!
Hi Christy, Love your recipes. My family is currently nuts over Muddy Soda Beverages of every kind! And buttery corn cobs baked in the oven. But please help a li’l California girl out and tell me exactly what a weenie is? I’m serious. Do you mean regular hot dogs or do you mean those little ones?
~Jen
They are just regular hot dogs 🙂
