This chocolate sundae cake is basically a delectable fudge sundae in cake form, complete with a moist dark chocolate fudge cake, chocolate syrup, whipped cream topping, and a cherry on top.
This chocolate sundae cake is definitely celebration-worthy on all counts. The appearance makes you think of red balloons and barbecues but beyond that, the ease of it is stunning. I dreamed this up years ago when I had company coming and wanted an impressive dessert with ingredients I had on hand. I was hoping they’d like it and the speed with which it disappeared confirmed that they did.
Lucky for me, it was so easy to make! This easy chocolate sundae cake recipe needs minimal ingredients. The first step is to bake the tender and moist dark chocolate fudge cake. Then we poke holes across it and pour over the delicious chocolate syrup, which soaks into the cake and makes it just melt in your mouth. Then the final step is to add the toppings! Because we’re going for a chocolate sundae look, we add whipped topping, chopped nuts, and maraschino cherries, but you can totally add your favorite ice cream toppings.
While we’re talking about chocolate cakes, if you’re looking for something similar to an old-fashioned hot fudge sundae cake that tastes absolutely delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, you must try my chocolate cobbler recipe! It’s basically a pudding-like that’s so easy to make, you’ll love it!

I HAVE MADE THIS ONLY USED CREAM OF COCONUT INSTEAD OF CHOC. SYRUP. I POURED IT OVER THE CAKE, ICED IT WITH COOLWHIP AFTER IT COOLED AND SPRINKLED FLAKED COCONUT AND CHOPPED PECANS OR ALMONDS OVER THE TOP EVEN SOME CHOCOLATE CHIPS. SORT OF A MOUNDS ALMOND JOY CAKE IF YOU WILL!
LOVED,LOVED,LOVED THIS!! My daughter saw the picture while I was looking for other yummie things. she had to have it for her birthday cake and it was a huge hit. We made it as directed but the kids topped their own slice with whatever syrup, sprinkles, etc. Now I have to make another for just the family.
I made an 8×8 cake and took it to a dinner with some of my family Saturday night. It got lots of compliments! My mother didn’t trust me to bring something (or didn’t think it would be good) so she made a dessert as well, but the chocolate sundae cake got more comments. 🙂 My low-carbing husband was even tempted enough to eat a leftover piece the next day. I made the rest into cupcakes that I froze to take to the in-laws for the 4th next weekend!
Well I made this Saturday and did not get the first bit of it so I forced myself to make one today (well Sunday considering it is technically Monday)and it totally rocks. It is beyond easy and kid friendly. Thanks Christy!!!
This cake was a BIG hit at my families get together today. Everyone raved on and on about it. I will be making it again real soon. Thank You so much!
I am so making this today. There’s a huge church a couple blocks behind us and it always has a Fourth of July festival on the Sunday before July 4 — which is today. It culminates in a dazzling fireworks show, which we watch in comfort from our deck. This will be the perfect accompaniment. Thank you so much!
Well, I made this cake and took it to the Hudson Reunion tonight. Every bite of the cake was eaten and I licked the pan when I got home. Even a few of the men came by and told me the cake was really good. ….and it is easy to make.
