Does a chocolate gravy recipe sound a bit odd to you? Well, for me, a professed chocolate lover, nothing with chocolate is ever ruled out but I was intrigued as to what this recipe would taste like when I whipped it up. For me, this is perfect: not too rich, but has that silky smooth chocolate flavor I adore.
Chocolate gravy’s roots are in the South for sure. Anywhere from Louisiana to Tennessee has claimed its origin even dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Anything that lasted that long just has to be good!
A Little History About the Chocolate Gravy Recipe
In days of old, with flour in abundance and other resources scarce, biscuits made a great breakfast and filling snack any time of day. Sweets were not a regular occurrence, so waking up in the morning to find fresh buttermilk biscuits and a boat of chocolate gravy was a wondrous treat. It was poured over the buttered flaky biscuits, then the tender bread soaks it up and as I found out when I tried it – you are then on your way to heaven no matter what the day has in store for you.
Here is the old-fashioned chocolate gravy recipe I used. Don’t try this unless you want the flavor to linger in your mind for the rest of your life. It was purely divine. Also, scroll down to find some suggestions about what else you can do with this special biscuit and chocolate gravy recipe.
Recipe Ingredients
- Sugar
- Flour
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Milk
- Butter
Put the (the , , and ) in a heavy saucepan.
Add the milk.
Whisk together well.
It will be a little lumpy but those will cook up so don’t worry. Just keep stirring. We want to stir this constantly, over medium heat. The goal is to bring it slowly to a boil.
We need to be careful though because if you stop stirring it the milk will scorch rather easily.
When it comes to a low boil, turn the heat off and continue stirring for a minute or two. This will thicken up rather suddenly to the consistency of a thin gravy.
Add butter and stir well.
Pour your chocolate gravy into a gravy boat and then get ready to pour it over your warm biscuits.

Recipe Notes
- Use whichever cocoa powder you prefer in this gravy recipe. I like the natural unsweetened cocoa powder but if you like Dutch-process cocoa powder, go for it!
- For more flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt at the end, just before serving.

Well, I wasn’t quick enough to get a picture of this but add some custard filling in the biscuit or some vanilla ice cream for a chocolate gravy eclair or ice cream sandwich. YUM! You could also serve it over buttermilk pancakes, vanilla ice cream with fresh strawberries, or a slice of pound cake. I have heard of chocolate gravy but I have never tasted it but since you said it can be made with splenda as soon as I remember to buy milk I will make it. It really sounds good. I was thinking I bet it would be good on just about anything wouldn’d it say like a spoon? Lol.
LOL< I think it is divine on a spoon!! I like the way you think Melanie!
My mom used to make this all the time.espspecaily when I had my friends over.mom would ask us what we wanted to eat of course we said chocolate gravy.i still love it to this day.
My grand kids just love chocolate gravy for breakfast and have for years . The oldest is 18 and will come over and say will you fix me some gravy please. I love you GRAN.
I’ve been an eastern KY hillbilly all my life (right in the middle of Hatfield & McCoy feud country) and grew up on “chocolate.” My mom always fixed this for breakfast and I much prefer it over sausage gravy. She is no longer with us and I have tried and tried to make it like she did, but it just never tastes the same (does it ever?). I notice that everyone here makes theirs with milk. Mommy NEVER used milk, just water. She would bring water in a pot to a boil, mix sugar, flour and cocoa in a bowl – enough water to make it liquidy – and then pour it into the boiling water. It took only a very short time to get thick. We always spooned it onto our plate or into a bowl, added butter, torn up up biscuits and bacon to the mix and sitrred it all up – YUMMY! I would absolutely LOVE to get that recipe down but haven’t gotten it right yet. But, I’ll keep trying!
I am so excited to find this website Christie! Born southern, raised southern, and will die southern. I have always made my chocolate gravy with water not milk, as i don’t like a pudding taste to it. I add the butter to it as it cooks. But it is all good. Great with home made biscuits, but you got to have bacon with it. The sweet and salty taste is so good!!
Dear Christy. I grew up eatting chocolate gravy, both my mama and my grandma made it for us, both done it a little different so I went with the way my grandma made it because her’s was a little sweeter. She also so would make it to pour on a box cake she would for sunday dinner we would have at her house. My kids Love it when I make for them.
Mmm chocolate and gravy…two of my favorite foods. Ha ha!
