Oh my. Look how pretty that pie is!

Return this to the refrigerator to firm up some more until ready to serve. I love using this pie server! The edging makes it so much easier to serve up!

Storage

Store leftover pie in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. But please note that the pie filling will eventually bleed into the cheesecake layer the longer it sits in the fridge. It’ll still taste good, it just won’t look as pretty!

Recipe Notes

  • This is a soft pie. It won’t get firm so keep it in the refrigerator and serve cold. Some readers have also mentioned that you can also double the cream cheese to keep it from being runny.
  • As mentioned, you can use any type of canned pie filling (I personally recommend blueberry). You can also omit the topping and instead just arrange fresh fruit on top of the cream cheese pie before serving.

Recipe FAQs

How do you avoid a lumpy cream cheese filling?

The key is to soften the cream cheese at room temperature before mixing.

Can you make cherry cream cheese pie in advance?

Absolutely! Because it needs time to chill, you can easily make your cream cheese pie up to 3 days ahead of time. However, I’d add the canned pie filling a few hours before serving. Otherwise, it’ll bleed into the cream cheese layer.

  1. I grew up with my grand parents so it was pretty much Christmas all year round. My grand mother was a master at making jams and any sweets known to man. They’re both gone now but oh the memories. God bless them both.

  2. About the pie, my version is similar to Jim Brown’s. I got the recipe from a fellow Home Ec. student in college. It is still my all time favorite pie. I will be 80 in just a few weeks.
Mix 4 oz cream cheese (original was 3 oz no longer available) and 2/3 cup of powdered sugar plus 1 tsp vanilla. Beat 1 cup heavy cream till stiff peaks form. Fold 1 cup of this whipped cream into the sweetened cream cheese. Spread in a graham cracker crust. Top with the purchased cherry pie filling. Stir about 2 tsp of sugar plus 1/2 tsp vanilla into the remaining cup of whipped cream. Spread over the cherries or drop in dollops around the edge of pie. Another trick I learned about 30 yrs ago is to slowly with the lowest speed of your mixer, beat in about 2 tbsp. dry instant vanilla pudding. This will stabilize your whipped cream and it will hold its shape for two or three days and you will not need to add the sugar or vanilla. I have made this version of the cherry pie, by using all types of the prepared pie filling blueberry, blackberry, pineapple, peach and even made my only fruit topping with gooseberries. I love this sharing of old-time recipes.

  3. I had a great Aunt that we visited on Sundays when I was a young girl. She always had this pie topped with pineapple and it was delicious!!! Precious food memories!!

My Mom used to make this for us and I have been making it for 40 years. My kids love it too. We have it every holiday and sometimes more throughout the year.

This looks wonderful. I have everything to make it. would a little cornstarch added, make it a little less soft? I may try that.

  6. My mother used to make a recipe very similar to this. The only difference is that she didn’t use sweetened condensed milk. Instead, she whipped up a package or two of Dream Whip & then added softened cream cheese to it – and a little bit of sugar. Definitely a family favorite!
