The Ingredients You’ll Need to Make this Cheese Soup recipe are:
- Borden® Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- Butter, Heavy Cream (or milk)
- Onion
- Chicken Broth
- Salt
- Pepper
- Paprika
Note: It is best not to use pre-shredded cheese for this as it won’t melt as well as the block cheese will.
While Brady handles the cheese grating, Katy is getting started with the first step over on the stovetop.
I am specifically using Borden® Cheese here because it is delicious, all natural, and is made by a cooperative of over 8,000 family owned dairy farms across the United States. The cheeses they offer include: Mild Cheddar, Mozzarella, Mexican, Swiss, Sharp Cheddar, American, Colby Jack, and more. They are available in singles, shreds, chunks, slices, strings, and snacks! This is creamy, flavorful, delicious cheese made in our homeland and it just makes every dish better.
This cheese soup is as simple as can be to make.
- Melt butter in a medium stock pot over medium heat.
- Add onions and cook, stirring often, until browned.
- Add in broth, cream, and seasonings.
- Reduce to simmer and cook, stirring often, for about ten minutes.
- Add in shredded cheese and continue cooking, stirring constantly, until cheese is melted.
Check out the video to see everyone adding in their favorite toppings. This is my bowl, with diced ham and steamed broccoli. ENJOY!

Love cheese soup!! And, we made a rule long ago to sit down at the table for mealtime!!
Such a cute pic of your kids. They grow so fast, don’t they? Enjoy your meals at the table together. We sure did – and still do.
I have just been looking for a good cheese soup. Thanks for this. Always good posts.
Dinner with the family is a long standing tradition, just my husband and I know. we love sitting at the full kitchen table, talking about the day and making plans for the future, over dinner.
Thanks for getting the word out there about how important this tradition is and how it can make a hugh impact on the family and our world
Great recipe and easily customizable to my entire family!
We love cheese soup. This looks like a recipe we need to include in our family cookbook.
Dinner time is Family time….and getting the kids to shred the cheese is a must.
This looks wonderful. Glad to see you shredded the cheese yourself. I read somewhere that this is the preferred way (versus buying the pre-shredded) because the pre-shredded has a waxiness to it to prevent clumping which can affect the texture of the soup. Not sure if that is true or not, but it does make sense. Thank you for all your wonderful, fun and easy recipes!
That is very true Yonette!
