I’m so glad you could come into my kitchen today! This tomato relish is an easy way to use up your summer produce that provides tons of flavor in each bite.
What is Tomato Relish
Tomato relish is sweet and tangy and the perfect way to use up all your summer produce. Spread this relish on hot dogs, toast, crackers, and more. The possibilities are endless on how you might enjoy this relish.
Ingredients Needed
- Green Tomatoes
- Red Bell Peppers
- Onions
- Salt
- Sugar
- Apple Cider Vinegar
How to Make
Start by washing and prepping all the vegetables as directed in the recipe card below.
Now toss the veggies into a food processor to bread them down a bit. You can also use a blender on the pulse setting if you do not own a food processor.
Add all the ingredients into a large pot on the stove and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30-45 minutes. The mixture will become thick as it cooks.
Fill your sterile mason jars and place in a water bath for 10 minutes. Once done place on a towel lined cooling rack to allow the relish to cool, and watch for the seals to pop.
Recipe FAQs
Here are some common questions for making this green tomato relish recipe.
Your lids will make a pop sound after a few minutes, or it can take up to 12 hours to seal. When you push down it should not make a popping noise.
If your jar doesn’t seal you have two options. Place in the fridge and use soon, so it doesn’t spoil. Or remove the lid and clean to make sure there is not relish around the seal and such. Then re-do the hot water bath to repeat the process. You can do this if it has been less than 24 hours of the first hot water bath.
Store your canned relish in a pantry or a cool dry place in your home. When you open a jar it will then need to be stored in the refrigerator and eaten within 1-2 weeks of being opened. I find the first few days of a jar being opened offer the best flavor.
