How to Make Beef and Broccoli

Cut beef into strips.

To begin with, cut your sirloin into thin strips.

A few weeks back a blogger buddy of mine had someone get irate with her for talking in terms of “your sirloin” and “your crockpot” when she gave instructions for recipes. I realized that I tend to talk like that back when I filmed cooking videos for Southern Living and the director had to correct me a few times. But I got to thinking about it when I was writing this post and really if it isn’t “your” sirloin then I don’t think you have a right to be cutting it. So unless folks go stealing ingredients to make their recipes with, I reckon calling it “yours” is a pretty good specification. 🙂

Cut sirloin against the grain.

You want to cut your sirloin against the grain

You do this so that it’s tender and easy to eat. A good way of knowing if you are cutting it right is to take a cut piece and gently pull it apart. This pulled apart pretty easily so I know I’ve got my dogs on the right trail here. Note: That is how easy it will come apart when you eat it, too!

 mix up cornstarch and pepper

Mix up your cornstarch and pepper in a bowl. Just stir them kinda good like this.

Mix the sirloin up in the cornstarch mix

Put all of your sirloin pieces in it and stir them up really well until they are coated. I tend to pick up the strays and press them down in the cornstarch to coat them.

Cook sirloin in a skillet.

Take a big old skillet and pour about two tablespoons of vegetable oil into it. Place this on medium-high heat for a few minutes. Add beef and cook, stirring often, until brown and no longer pink in the center.

Cooked beef in skillet.

Like this.

Now remove that cooked beef to a clean bowl and set it aside.

add broccoli to skillet with garlic and oil

After you have removed the cooked beef, add the remaining tablespoon of oil, broccoli, and minced garlic to the skillet.

Have Extra Broccoli On Hand

If you’re like me, you’ll need to add extra broccoli to replace the broccoli that you ate while getting to this point in the cooking process.  Putting raw broccoli (or carrots) within arms reach of me and expecting me not to eat them is an unrealistic expectation that everyone on the planet should just go ahead and cast to the wind.

Reduce heat to medium and cook the broccoli, stirring often, until tender (about 3-4 minutes).

Add beef back to broccoli in pan.

Add the meat back to the pan.

add soy sauce and water to skillet.

Combine soy sauce with 1/3 cup of water and add this to the skillet.

cook beef and broccoli til sauce is thickened

Continue to fry sauce, stirring often, until sauce is thickened (about 3-4 minutes or so).

serve the beef and broccoli over rice

Serve over hot cooked rice and enjoy!

Yum yum yum, delicioso!

How To Store Beef and Broccoli

Store beef and broccoli leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can also place them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating in the microwave.

  1. Hey great post! I found this on Pinterest and am excited to try. However, I just wanted to add a small correction. As someone isn’t on as good terms with gluten as you (consider yourself blessed), I just wanted to let you know that this recipe isn’t gluten-free. Soy Sauce is one of those sneaky things that seems harmless but is actually not gluten free as one of its main ingredients is wheat. However, this recipe is easily tweak-able as gluten free soy sauce alternatives do exist (i.e. gluten free soy sauce, tamari sauce, coconut aminos). But I just wanted to let you know that for future reference. It may be confusing for those trying to find gluten-free lifestyle.

    1. Hey Courtney, Thanks! Carrie had very kindly pointed that out as well a while back (few comments up). I think there are certain types of soy sauce that have less gluten as well, or like you say flat out gluten free alternatives. I am very thankful for not having to worry about it with my family as I’ve seen how difficult it can be with friends.
Just about the only thing I’m allergic to at this point is fresh air – thank goodness for Claritin! 😀

  2. Iwent to Krogers n got my steak n broccoli for this recipe yesterday. I MADE IT TODAY FOR LUNCH ,FOR MY HUBBY N ME! ☆☆☆☆☆5 star recipe totally delish! And EASY! 3. Hi Christy. It took me about a month, but we finally made this for dinner tonight and it was terrific! Fast and easy too. I think we’ll add some fresh grated ginger next time, because we usually add that to dishes like this but I forgot. It was still great, of course. Oh, and we really like hot stuff, so we added a drop of chili sesame oil to the pan. That’s just us though, kinda crazy, lol. It was as good, if not better than, takeout!

For the person asking what to make as a side, I made a salad with an Asian Sesame dressing, (Ken’s Steak House Lite Asian Sesame with Ginger & Soy Dressing, which also makes a wonderful marinade for chicken, by the way).

I’m glad that I bought two packages of the boneless sirloin when it was on sale this week because I put one in the freezer so I can make this again real soon. Oh, and my mother tried this recipe last week and they loved it too, (she’s a subscriber and regular reader, but doesn’t comment much except in emails to me telling me about your recipes, ha ha!) Thanks for yet another great recipe, Christy! I don’t know what I ever did before I found your website and your books! My husband is very, very happy! 🙂

  4. This looks really tasty and easy enough even I could make it. I do have a question. I have two boys that inhale almost everything…what is another side that would go with this? Along with the rice too.

    1. Oh goodness, I just serve this and as a side, more of this! lol. A great side would be some egg rolls or maybe egg drop soup. I don’t have my egg drop soup recipe on here but I will try to get to it eventually. For the egg rolls, you could make life easier and just pick up some frozen ones – then make like you made them from scratch ~winks~

  5. Could the meat and broccoli be frozen ahead of time and then pulled it and put in the crockpot? Trying to find some good freezer meals that can be prepped, pulled put, and cooked 🙂 thank you!!
