The best method for cleaning wooden spoons is the simplest one. Hand wash them in hot, soapy water and dry them with a clean towel. The dishwasher can cause them to crack or warp and letting them air dry may do the same.
If you like, once in a while, you can massage them with a little olive oil or coconut oil to keep them in great shape. Coconut oil in particular has some antimicrobial activity meaning it can help keep some types of bacteria at bay.
I just started using wooden spoons again and love them. Walmart has a few that have nice round handles that are slightly larger than the standard wooden spoon; this makes them more comfortable for my hands when my arthritis flares up. They are a much more prettier dark wood than the standard light wood spoons as well. Adds to the “farmhouse kitchen” look of my kitchen. 🙂

I love using wooden spoons. I have one that is really long handled that I use to stir fudge and candy. When stirring the candy for several minutes at a full rolling boil, I have had trouble getting burned by the splatters if not using the long handled spoon. Thanks for the tips!

I just broke a wooden spoon that I bought when I got married in 1959. I used it for everything and never oiled it. It just absorbed the oils from the butter and shortening I used. It was as smooth as glass. That was a sad day. My sister-in-law bought me a left handed wooden ladle, hand made. it’s beautiful. I have several wooden utensils. Love them for all the reasons everyone posted.
I agree with the Lady Knitter….I don’t really like wood utensils because I feel like they’re never really clean.
Do I worry about a metal spoon damaging my non-stick cookware? No, because I don’t use non-stick cookware (except for my iron skillets).
Do I worry about a metal spoon burning my fingers? No, because I have several cute spoon rests that I use when cooking.
I do have a flat wood “scraper” that I use to lean over the counter and flip on the disposal or overhead light switches on the wall, since my arms are so short!

I LOVE my wooden spoons! Can’t imagine my kitchen without them. My absolute favorite one belonged to my mama. When she passed away that was just about the only thing I was willing to fight my brother over but fortunately he didn’t put up a fight LOL! It has a long handle and is the only spoon I use to make my sweet tea… My husband swears that the spoon actually makes the tea taste better! 🙂
